In conjunction with the publication of ‘G. E. Kidder Smith Builds: The Travel of Architectural Photography’, three exhibitions examine his photographic legacy: ‘At Home in America’ features a selection of residential buildings located throughout the USA; ‘Discovering Italy’ reveals Italy’s modern architecture against the backdrop of its ancient past; ‘Building Books’ explores the tools GEKS used to produce visually engaging and deeply researched books.
‘Discovering Italy’ presents a selection of photographs from Kidder Smith’s illustrated books published between 1955 and 1964 focused on Italian architecture, both historical and modern. While ‘Italy Builds. Its Modern Architecture and Native Inheritance’ (1955) was published in English and Italian translation, ‘The Magnificence of Italy’ (1957–61) unfortunately remained unpublished. ‘The New Architecture of Europe’ (1961) and ‘The New Churches of Europe’ (1964) featured selections of modern Italian buildings. Kidder Smith examined Italian architecture through the eyes of a modern architect and created a transatlantic dialogue aimed at educating Americans about the challenges and opportunities of critically coexisting with the past.
